Nestled in the heart of the Milan Uptown neighborhood, this stunning 4-bay shotgun home stood as a testament to New Orleans’ architectural history. Its dated interior and awkward layout presented an opportunity to modernize the space while preserving its original charm. Our team took on the challenge of reimagining this historic home to create a more functional and comfortable living environment that honors the character of New Orleans architecture.
This historic shotgun home featured many beloved elements of classic New Orleans design: original hardwood floors throughout, pocket doors and transoms, soaring 12-foot ceilings, original wood windows, and exposed brick fireplaces. Despite its charm, the house had previously undergone a poor conversion from a double into a single-family home, leaving the layout impractical and uninspired. Our client sought to refresh the property by reconfiguring the existing layout, moving the kitchen, and adding a private primary suite—all while maintaining the home’s timeless aesthetic.
From the outset, our team was committed to balancing historic preservation with modern functionality. Key goals included:
- Retaining Original Features: Designing to preserve and honor the home’s historic elements, including the original wood doors with transoms, corner fireplaces, and intricate millwork.
- Shotgun Layout Reimagined: Maintaining the iconic shotgun style while improving flow by designing a hallway to connect the rooms, eliminating the need to walk through bedrooms to reach other areas of the home.
- Kitchen Relocation: The small, outdated kitchen was moved to create a more intuitive layout and make space for a central gathering area.
- Creating a Primary Suite: A spacious and private primary suite was added with modern features that blended seamlessly with the rest of the historic design.
Throughout the process, we collaborated closely with the client to ensure their vision came to life while addressing the unique challenges of working within a historic structure.
The renovation process required thoughtful planning and attention to detail. New layouts and designs were introduced with care, respecting the home’s historic character.
By creating a hallway, we retained the shotgun’s iconic charm without sacrificing privacy or functionality. The new kitchen at the rear of the home boasts modern appliances and custom wood cabinetry, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. The primary suite includes a tranquil retreat with a walk-in closet and a bathroom featuring timeless tilework that nods to the home’s era.
The before and after pictures speak for themselves. You can see how this New Orleans shotgun was transformed and was brought back to life. Before the home’s interior was well-kept but dated, with a layout that didn’t serve modern living. The after? Thoughtful updates have turned this historic gem into a functional and beautiful space that celebrates its New Orleans heritage.
The newly renovated 4-bay shotgun home is a beautiful example of how thoughtful design can honor the past while embracing the present. By preserving the home’s historic features and addressing functional shortcomings, we’ve created a space that embodies the spirit of New Orleans architecture. This project highlights our expertise in renovating historic homes and our dedication to maintaining the city’s unique architectural heritage.
